The Vancouver Animal Emergency and Referral Centre is an established, cutting edge, multi-disciplinary facility located in metropolitan Vancouver. Our emergency/critical care service is seeking enthusiastic, highly motivated Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) to join our ever growing team!

The Registered Veterinary Technologists at our hospital have an interesting and varied workload. They are heavily relied upon by the emergency team veterinarians and specialists to manage hospitalized patients while also being responsible for facilitating outpatient care and triage. Managing a wide variety of hospitalized cases is both stimulating and challenging while providing great personal and professional satisfaction. This means that in addition to utilizing basic technical skills you will also apply skills not commonly used in general practice. This includes: Trauma patient and critical care nursing, transfusion medicine (blood typing, cross-matching, administration of blood products), maintaining a variety of infusions via state-of-the-art equipment, utilizing balanced analgesic approaches for pain management, performing advanced technical procedures (nasogastric tube, central line, arterial catheter placement and more) and obtaining radiographs using hands free imaging techniques!

Although previous experience in an emergency setting is an asset, it is not a requirement. Ideal candidates are experienced RVTs who have a desire to continue to improve their technical skills and are eager to learn new ones. Recent RVT graduates who are ambitious and confident in their abilities, or who possess above average technical experiences, are also encouraged to apply. 

This is a unique opportunity for an RVT who is interested in pursuing a VTS in Emergency and Critical Care. As part of our ER team, we have two Veterinary Technologists with their VTS in emergency and critical care, and our Veterinary Technologist Team Lead is an experienced VTS in anesthesia/analgesia, providing both mentorship and technical support to all services in our hospital.

The applicant must be willing to work split shifts and have at least 1 or 2 years of experience.

The working duties will be:
• Milk cows. 
• Recognize and treat health problems. Such as milkfever, retained placenta, ketose, mastitis.
• Perform dry off and close up treatments
• Monitor the health and well being of the dairy herd
• Calf out cows. Recognize and assist problem calvings
• Feeding and monitoring calves 
• Heat detection and AI
• Keep paper and electronic records

Qualifications

About the Role
The surgery service at VCA Canada Vancouver Animal Emergency and Referral Centre is looking to add another dedicated Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) to our team. The caseload is diverse and interesting; our anesthesia technologists not only induce and monitor patients while under anesthesia, they place arterial lines, perform epidurals, and perform femoral and sciatic nerve blocks for orthopedic procedures with the assistance of a nerve finder. If you have an interest in pursuing a VTS in Anesthesia/Analgesia this is a fantastic opportunity to join a growing team, lead by an experienced VTS in Anesthesia/Analgesia who provides excellent support and mentoring. Previous anesthesia experience in a referral centre is an asset, but not a requirement. Highly motivated and confident new graduates with above average anesthesia experience and interest are also encouraged to apply.

Hours of work will generally be Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday (ten hour shifts). Candidates should have some flexibility to be available on evenings and weekends, should coverage be needed in other areas of the hospital.

About the Role

The emergency and specialty service at VCA Canada Vancouver Animal Emergency and Referral Centre is adding more dedicated Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) to our team. The Registered Veterinary Technologists in our hospital have an interesting and varied workload. They are heavily relied upon by the emergency team veterinarians and specialists to manage our hospitalized patients and are responsible in facilitating outpatient care and triage. Managing a wide variety of hospitalized cases is an interesting, stimulating and challenging experience that offers great personal satisfaction. This means that besides using all of your basic technical skills you will apply skills not commonly used in general practice. This includes: in house blood-typing and cross matching, administering blood transfusions, maintaining a variety of CRIs via different modalities. Although previous experience in an emergency setting is an asset, it is not a requirement. Recent RVT Grads that are motivated and confident in their abilities who possess above average technical experiences are encouraged to apply.
