Do you enjoy a fast-paced work environment? Do you enjoy a challenge, and the opportunity to apply all the skills you learned in school? Are you looking to learn new skills and grow as a technician?

The Veterinary Specialty Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador is the province’s only specialty referral centre and 24 hours full service emergency clinic. We provide expert care, right here. We are looking for someone who enjoys a challenge, is excited by opportunities to learn, is comfortable working alone, but is also ready to be part of a team that comes together to ensure the best care possible for our patients and their families. Ours is a team that works hard, but also laughs hard, appreciating that many hands and a smile makes for light work. We are a hospital that cares strongly for our patients, but also for our staff. We want you to have fun both at and away from work. Team members often extended invitations to the whole team when getting together for food or community events, and as a hospital we throw two annual parties to give everyone a chance to relax and have fun together away from the clinic.

Job Type: Full-Time
Location: Vancouver

Job Description:

Registered Veterinary Technologist

The Vancouver Animal Emergency and Referral Centre is an established, cutting edge, multi-disciplinary facility located in metropolitan Vancouver. Our emergency/critical care service is seeking enthusiastic, highly motivated Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) to join our ever growing team!

The Registered Veterinary Technologists at our hospital have an interesting and varied workload. They are heavily relied upon by the emergency team veterinarians and specialists to manage hospitalized patients while also being responsible for facilitating outpatient care and triage. Managing a wide variety of hospitalized cases is both stimulating and challenging while providing great personal and professional satisfaction. This means that in addition to utilizing basic technical skills you will also apply skills not commonly used in general practice. This includes: Trauma patient and critical care nursing, transfusion medicine (blood typing, cross-matching, administration of blood products), maintaining a variety of infusions via state-of-the-art equipment, utilizing balanced analgesic approaches for pain management, performing advanced technical procedures (nasogastric tube, central line, arterial catheter placement and more) and obtaining radiographs using hands free imaging techniques!

Although previous experience in an emergency setting is an asset, it is not a requirement. Ideal candidates are experienced RVTs who have a desire to continue to improve their technical skills and are eager to learn new ones. Recent RVT graduates who are ambitious and confident in their abilities, or who possess above average technical experiences, are also encouraged to apply.

This is a unique opportunity for an RVT who is interested in pursuing a VTS in Emergency and Critical Care. As part of our ER team, we have two Veterinary Technologists with their VTS in emergency and critical care, and our Veterinary Technologist Team Lead is an experienced VTS in anesthesia/analgesia, providing both mentorship and technical support to all services in our hospital.

If you think this position is of interest but you are unsure if emergency medicine is for you, we can arrange for you to spend some time with our RVTs in order to help you decide!

Benefits include: Extended medical, dental, A.D.D and life insurance, uniforms and discounted pet Care, BCVTA membership dues, continuing education, wellness days and sick leave. The RVTs in the critical care/emergency service generally work four ten hour shifts per week on a 24 hour rotation.
